The Chicken or The Egg?

Which came first? Well, in our case the chickens arrived to our house first. I thought I'd let you all know that today one of them laid an egg for the first time!

I put it in my hand to give you a visual of how small it is, but then realized.. you may think I have small hands and the egg looks big. Hmm... in any case, it's tiny and hilarious :-) Their eggs will get bigger soon!

Wow, Katie! Your chickens sure are laying early. Most breeds take 6 months before they start laying. We have Black Australorps as well and they were 6 months when they laid their first egg. It looked just like the one you are holding, although within a few months they were GIANT!! Love those huge eggs!

Pretty soon you'll have them coming out of your ears and you won't know what to do with them all.

Just curious:
1) Do you still have 21, or did you lose any?
2) Did you end up with all hens, or did a few roosters sneak by the inspectors?

@Mrs. Querido - We were supposed to be able to have them, then the town decided no. So... they are now at my parents farm, which is only 2 miles away.

@Jen - I'm guessing it was the Red Stars that have started laying, I read on someone's personal website that they found them to be early maturing. But who knows :-) I didn't exactly watch it happen ;-) All 21 survived. But we gave 4 to my mother-in-law because she asked if she could have some. And, fortunately for us, we did end up with all hens! :-) If you read up on Red Stars you'll see that there won't be any mistakes on those baby chicks!

I think that is pretty cool. My kids would be in awe. Come to think of it, so would I.
